Day 8 at Paris 2024 preview
Thanks for joining us today on the official live blog.
Here's what to expect tomorrow – bearing in mind we are due to hear an update on the scheduling for the surfing in Tahiti in around four hours.
It is a packed day of action on Day 8, with thewomen's 100m finalin track and field athletics (9:20pm) and the swimmingwomen's 800m freestyle final(9:09pm) both scheduled to take place.
Also in athletics,Ryan Crouserwill have his sights set on both breaking his own world record again in themen's shot put final(7:35pm) as well as becoming the first man to win the title three times in a row.
There are a total of31 gold medalsto be awarded on 3 August, including in therowing eights, judo mixed team, andtennis women's singles, and here are some of the day's top highlights:
Athletics (track and field) - Richardson vs Alfred, Fraser-Pryce the rest
All eyes at theStade de Francewill be on the women's blue riband event: thewomen's 100m final, likely to featureSha'Carri Richardson and Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce as well as St Lucia'sJulien Alfred among the medal favourites.
Swimming - Ledecky to continue 800m dominance?
Ledeckyowns the 16 fastestwomen's 800m freestyletimes in history, and has won the event at every Olympic Games since London 2012.
However, maybe her stranglehold isn't what it once was? In February, she was beaten in an 800 free race by Canada's McIntosh, who became the first swimmer to beat Ledecky in the event in 13 years, although the latterwon't be racingthe endurance distance in Paris.
But surely the likes of Australia'sAriarne Titmus, the Tokyo silver medallist behind Ledecky, will have taken note: Ledecky is not infallible.

Football: France hang on to narrow win over Argentina
Argentina knocked on the door multiple times but were simply unable to find a way through a stern French defence through 12 minutes of added time.

The grudge match finishes 1-0.
Here's a recap of all of today's men's football quarter-finals:
- Morocco 4 USA 0
- Japan 0 Spain 3
- Egypt 1 Paraguay 1 (after extra time; Egypt won 5-4 on penalties)

Tennis: Siniakova/Machac win mixed doubles gold in match tiebreak
Would you believe it, the mixed doubles gold medal final has gone to a match tiebreak.
Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac of Czechia find themselves 0-3 down in this tie-break, but keep their nerve to come back againstWang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen of People's Republic of China.
This is going all the way and at [8]-[8] in the tiebreak, Wang and Zhang double-fault to give Siniakova and Machac match point.
They convert on the first opportunity on an unforced error.
Siniakova has another gold after her women's doubles title in Tokyo 2020.
And Wang and Zhang, who came into this tournament as alternates, are all smiles – it's been an incredible run for them.
Siniakova/Machac win 6-2 5-7 [10]-[8].

And it's been disallowed for a foul by Akliouche.

BMX Racing: Daudet leads French podium sweep
Such is the format of theBMX Racing competition, that after two rounds of three races each with a low-point system, the medals will be decided in a single one-off final.
There are, believe it or not, three French riders in the men's final afterJoris Daudet,Sylvain André, andRomain Mahieu all qualified from the semi-finals.
They're joined byCam Wood of USA,Cedric Butti andSimon Marquart of Switzerland,Mateo Carmona of Colombia, andIzaac Kennedy of Australia.
Can the French seal a podium sweep? André, notably, finished fourth in Tokyo, agonisingly short of the podium.
Daudet has the inside gate number one with a right turn first up. It's a fast start for both him and André!
Kennedy tries to take Mahieu but he crashes! The French are still going at the front! And they're heading for a 1-2-3!
Joris Daudet wins gold! Sylvain André wins silver! And Romain Mahieu wins bronze!
Helmets have gone flying in celebration. Over at La Défense, the swimming arena breaks out into celebration as the news filters through.

Cycling BMX Racing: Beth Shriever likely into final
Speaking of the BMX Racing, women's defending championBeth Shriever of Great Britain has won the first two runs of the semi-finals and is likely into the final at 9:50pm tonight.
Shriever is good friends with track cyclist Emma Finucane, who recently spoke to us about it:
"She's a huge role model for me. She's taught me so much, like how to be an athlete, and how to be 'Emma off the bike'. I need to be happy and that will help me channel my 'Emma on the bike'.
"So she's taught me so much and I've really looked up to her and she's taken me under her wing."

Swimming: Léon Marchand just misses world record in dominant 200m IM swim for gold
Right, are we ready for more Marchand Mania?
He's the top qualifier – unsurprisingly – for themen's 200m individual medley final. Japan's Seto Daiya, Great Britain'sDuncan Scott andTom Dean, USA'sCarson Foster, and defending championWang Shun (CHN) are all also in this final.
Listen to that reception forLéon Marchand! "Allez les Bleus" chants mix in with "Léon, Léon".
Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle. Four lengths of the pool, one of each. The crowd quietens before an almighty roar as they hit the pool.
Marchand and Seto have fast starts as does Wang in six. It's Wang who turns in the lead butMarchand has made his move on the backstroke.
He's surged ahead of Wang and the crowd is just getting louder by the second. He turns in the lead at halfway as they go to breaststroke, the crowd yelling "Allez" every time the Frenchman comes up for air.
This is remarkable from Marchand who has more than three-quarters of a body length lead now!He is under world record split!
Marchand has a sprint to the wall for the world record! This crowd wants him to do it! A full body length clear!
Just shy of the world record – by six-hundredths of a second!Léon Marchand wins the 200m IM in 1:54.06 and takes away another Olympic record from Michael Phelps!
Duncan Scott was 1.25 seconds behind andWang Shun completes the podium.
Marchand gets out of the pool and raises his arms outstretched to his side, taking this crowd in as they start to sing.
That is four gold medals and four Olympic records for France's golden boy in the pool this week.

Swimming: Kaylee McKeown breaks 12-year-old Olympic record to win women's 200m backstroke
Okay, tonight's finals are coming thick and fast in the pool as all three are scheduled at the start of the session.
Here's thewomen's 200m backstroke, withPhoebe Bacon of USA the fastest semi-finalist andKaylee McKeown, the world record holder from Australia, next to her in lane five.
McKeown andRegan Smith in lane 7 are out to fast starts, but it'sKylie Masse in lane 2 who turns first at 50m, nearly four-tenths under McKeown's world record split.
Smith has moved to the front on this second length of the pool now and they are extending their lead on that world record line!
Fading a little on this third length but Smith is still in the lead as they come back. McKeown has timed this perfectly and is a little ahead now.
Can Smith find anything?Kaylee McKeown is going to win gold in a new Olympic record 2:03.73!
Regan Smith form USA in 2:04.26 takes silver, and bronze toKylie Masse of Canada in 2:05.57.

Swimming: McEvoy pips Proud at the wall to win men's 50m free
"Florent, Florent" the crowd chant. It's super loud as both he and Dressel, the reigning champion and Olympic record holder, are introduced for this men's 50m free final.
There's really nothing much to say about tactics for this race: get a length of the pool done as quickly as you can. Some swimmers try to breath as little as they can.
The world record is 20.91 and the Olympic record is 21.07. Will either mark fall?
Manaudou, in lane one, gets the "Viking clap" going from the crowd. Have I mentioned it's loud?
In they go! It's Ben Proud, he's leading from the front, has he got it? He hasn't! Cameron McEvoy pips him!
This place explodes in joy asFlorent Manaudou wins bronze!
McEvoy in 21.25, Proud in 21.30, Manaudou in 21.56.
