Prem dials down objection to Independent Regulator
Prem chiefs have dialled down their stance after the new Labour Government reintroduced a Bill to establish an Independent Regulator, writes MARTIN LIPTON.
League bosses had previously warned of the “unintended consequences” of the proposed new body to have financial and other oversight powers.
But after the measure was included in the address at Westminster, the Prem response was much more low-key.
In a briefing note, the Government said the Regulator would “protect football clubs across England, ensuring their financial sustainability and giving fans a greater say in the way clubs are run”.
It promised a block on any clubs joining any breakaway “closed” Super League “while providing the certainty and sustainability required to drive future investment and growth, so that English Football remains a global success story”.
Full details of any extra powers from the Bill introduced in the previous Parliament have yet to emerge although the Government said it was “strengthening proposals to ensure that fans have a greater voice in their own clubs”.
In response, a Premier League spokesperson said: “We look forward to working with the new Government and discussing the detail of the Bill. The success of the Premier League model enables us to support the best-funded football ecosystem in the world, including substantial investment into grassroots and communities.
“It is critical that the regulation of this highly successful industry is proportionate and effective, to ensure that English football can continue to be world-leading and deliver for millions of fans.”

Yoro deal poses question over De Ligt move
Leny Yoro's impending arrival at Manchester United has posed questions over fellow centre-back Matthijs De Ligt's expected arrival.
Lille's Yoro is poised to sign within 24 hours while a fee with Bayern Munich has yet to be agreed for De Ligt.
And with United also said to be monitoring Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, the Dutchman's transfer appears from certain.
That's also because Yoro's move could take up a sizeable chunk of manager Erik ten Hag's transfer budget - at around £52million in total.

Joshua tells fans: I'm unpredictable
New Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has told fans he's "creative" and "unpredictable".
The ex-Bologna hero, 23, a bit-part player for the Netherland at Euro 2024, is also "privileged" to join up with a fellow countryman in Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag.
Zirksee told Sky Sports: "It's been a rollercoaster the last few weeks... I'm very happy to be here.
"It's an extra privilege because we're both Dutch. But of course it's not the only reason I'm here - Manchester United is a huge club."

Zirkzee tipped to unleash Hojlund potential
Ex-Manchester United defender Wes Brown is confident £33million newcomer Joshua Zirkzee can spur fellow striker Rasmus Hojlund to his true heights.
The 23-cap Englishman, 44, hailed the Dutchman's arrival from Bologna.
Brown told the Euro Thrash podcast: "I am very happy with it, he’s definitely a player that we need and he’s a young lad.
"I think he’s going to be good and it is going to be interesting. Hojlund hasn’t scored enough goals, it’s as simple as that.
"Everything else in his game is good. It is good that there is now a small battle between them two to see who is going to be playing. It is a very good option and an option that we needed.
Last season, if we needed an option we had to go into the youth team."

Ex-Utd defender's instant move
A former Manchester United player went from free agent to a new club in a matter of moments.
Centre-back James Chester -who came through United's academy- woke up temporarily without a team after leaving League Two Barrow.
The announcement was made at 12.45pm - but just 15 minutes later he had a new club.
His unemployment did not last long as League Two Salford confirmed his move.
They posted: "Salford City announces the signing of ex-Wales centre-back James Chester on a one-year deal!"
Chester made his United debut in 2009 as a sub when he replacedGary Nevilleagainst Derby in the League Cup.
He spent two more years at Old Trafford before leaving in 2011 to join Hull.
Chester, 35, had other spells with West Brom, Aston Villa, Stoke and Derby before dropping down to League Two with Barrow and now Salford - owned by United legends Neville, brother Phil, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Rooney in a class of his own
Gary Neville reckons Wayne Rooney is easily the best centre-forward he ever played with.
Former right-back Nev played with Rooney for Manchester United and England - as well as Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford.
But Ron was more a winger in his legendary 2003-2009 first spell with the Red Devils.
And Neville told Sky Bet's Stick to Football: The Overlap Special: “When it comes to the best centre forward that I played with, there is no other answer than Wayne Rooney.
"I know that is something that a lot of Manchester United fans disagree with.
"No one could do what Rooney could do with his hold-up play, his movement on and off the ball, beating a man, scoring goals, tackling, pressing and could play in a variety of positions.
“No one gets close to him in terms of an all-round forward. I don’t hesitate in saying that he’s the best centre forward that I played with."
